Thanks,
I will try for this one as I missed the last one.
I had one that was my Grandma's it was on the wall and in the 1980's my eldest daughter was doing hand-stands inside! when it got knocked off the wall. The said daughter has just been visiting, I reminded her of the incident & she said she would replace it. I hope it doesn't prove to costly, however it should be safe now as she is too old to hand-stand anymore.

Good Morning to you George,

Here is a grand old photograph of Whaley Co-Op.

Know anything about it?

I’ve got another one that is interesting and you may know the people on it; but we’ll see how this one goes first.

Hi R.S.S.

Has this been on the forum before?  I have seen it previously perhaps posted by Parabuild I seem to think it has been sugested  it might have been at Furness Vale where there was a branch shop on the corner of Yeardsley Lane. Looking at the building causes me to wonder if  the building was originally a toll bar the door being on the corner with two windows to see in both directions. Of particuler interest is the name is only Whaley Bridge Co-op and not W.B. & buxton sugesting it was take befoere 1913, also the advert for the quarterly members meeting.

Hi George,

I think it most certainly is Furness Vale and you could be correct about the toll house. However, I was told recently by one of the older residents that it definitely was not a toll house.

I was rather surprised that he knew what a toll house was but there you go.

It does bear all the hallmarks of a toll house and the position, sliced off corner and hipped roof indicate that it was one.

I was a little interested in the boot polish advertised in both windows.

Hi George,

I don’t know if you know who the man is wearing the suit.

Obviously the man at the front is Albert Steptoe with his faithful steed Hercules.

Good morning R.S.S.

I don't know who the men are but I am wondering if the man in the suit was Mr. Storer.

george.

It was Mr. Ashmore, George.

But as for Albert Steptoe and Hercules; well I really have no idea.

Thanks: 3 times

The Co-op branch in Furness Vale was purpose built as a store.. Originally the shop only occupied the left hand side of the building, the other side being a private house. It may originally have been intended for Co-op staff but by the 1930's the school music teacher was living there.

The only toll bar that I know of in Furness was on Station Road  just on the Marsh Lane side of the bridge over the Goyt.

Looks more like the New Mills end of Marsh Lane to me?

But not sure.

Sorry George I don’t have a date for the image, but here is another picture with Furness Vale Coop in the background. The house next door can also be plainly seen to the right of the main building.

What a lovely image. Everyone wearing a cap or hat, not like today. Why did hats lose their appeal?
