The next meeting of Furness Vale Local History Society is on Tuesday 1st May at 7.30pm. The venue is Furness Vale Community Centre, Yeardsley Lane. Our speaker will be Pamela Pearson on the subject "The History of Stockport Market Place".

The next meeting of Furness Vale Local History Society is on Tuesday 5th June at 7.30pm. As usual the venue is Furness Vale Community Centre, Yeardsley Lane. Our speaker will be Glen Atkinson on the subject "The Undergound Canals of Worsley" This is the story of the Duke of Bridgewater's coal mines and the canals that he built to serve them.
Non members are always welcome, admission £1.

The June issue of our newsletter is now available and is of course free. This is published quarterly and includes news, information and forthcoming coming local events. If you would like a copy just send your email address to furnesshistory@gmail.com and your name will be added to our mailing list. Printed copies will also be available at our meetings.

Furness Vale Local History Society meets on Tuesday 4th September after a summer break. The speaker is Jenny Ainsworth who will tell us the story of Vera Brittain and Buxton.
Vera Brittain spent much of her youth living in Buxton. In 1915 she served as a V.A.D. nurse working at the Devonshire Royal Hsopital.
She is known for her best selling book "Testament of Youth" published in 1932, her memoir of wartime experience and of her road to pacifism.
Vera Brittain was a reformer and feminist. Her daughter is the politician Shirley Williams.

The subject of the October meeting is "Stage Carriage" the story 200 years of public transport on the A6. Stage coaches, horse buses and motor buses.

Furness Vale History Society meet next on Tuesday 7th May. The speaker is Andy Russell on the subject of Colditz. As well as stories from this famous prison camp, Andy will present some of his collection of memorabilia including some props from the TV series.

Next meeting is on Tuesday 4th June when the guest speaker will be Ann Metcalf. The title of her talk is "Every Year Forever" a celebration of folklore and customs. Ann is a fine speaker and we are assured of an interesting and entertaining evening.
We will then be taking our usual summer break with the following meeting being on 3rd September.

The guest speaker will be Peter Braun, a National Trust volunteer on the subject of "Dunham Massey Hall",the former home of the Earls of Stamford near Altrincham.
