To create a cosy ball of positive fuzz, I would like to start a thread that recognises the people, shops and businesses of Whaley Bridge that make a real contribution to making our village truly great.
It would be really nice if we could all take just 5 seconds out to post a name and let's start recognising and rewarding the unsung champions in our community.
I'll get the ball rolling by nominating two businesses and one person:
The Shepherds - the comforting heartbeat of the village
Wilde's the Butchers - consistently provides quality and courtesy
CllrJonG - Whaley's answer to George Clooney

Sean pike - The man is a leg end
Bellas - Great breakfast
All the bands and acts that entertain us week in week out
And finally Dogger Davies because every village needs a tramp.

JohnP – For services to Whaley Bridge over a long period of time.
Furness Vale Chippy – The best new business for years.

Pete Dunn – contribution to local music and bands. I don't think there's a band in the village he's not played in.
John Golpin – for what he has done and is doing at Whaley Bowling Club. He's rejuvenating the Club especially with the introduction of poker on Thursday's.
Al Madina – by far the best curry house in the village.
Shepherds Arms – top pub.

My nominations would be:
Coleman's Butchers. Without doubt the best butchers for miles and, in my opinion, far better quality at a more reasonable price than Wilde's
Royal Bank of Scotland for being the only Bank prepared to retain a presence in the village.
Jake Walsh for his ability to maintain his dignity and a sense of humour in the face of considerable flak on this Forum.
Pyjama Factory – the most entertaining and talented band to come out of Whaley in a long time.

I would second most of those-Mr Dunn is indeed an unsung hero worthy of an MID and Bella's is best newcomer
I would add :
Stan Pearson Motor engineer -on the bings-established many years and setting a standard few can follow
The veg shop for making a renewed effort to survive in the face of adversity
Goyt wines-best independant off licence for miles-Bramhall is the next nearest
The White Hart-the building! that is . For putting up wih so many landlords attempts to run it and never knowing if it's coming or going.
While we are all being positive-it must be the sun :)-don't you think the new florist has brightened up the basin a bit
Oh and Tony at the Goyt deserves a mention for his efforts in keeping a traditional village pub going
Cheers

Yep Mr Dunn deserves a mention for putting together numerous bands over the years
Also, The landlords of the Goyt and Sheps for keeping the spirit of a community local going (& excellent ale) in these difficult times.
The Staff of the co-op and veg shop for keeping going and surviving the Tesco invasion.
The newbies, Java for bringing something different, and the florist for adding interest in the basin.
Goyt wines for being excellent purveyors of good wines and beers.
Bella's, Babka, for providing food.

We are extremely lucky - We went to Hathersage on Sunday for their Well Dressing and Gala Weekend. What a waste of time that was. Nothing happening, no sense of community activity or involvement. Not even a nice cup of tea in the Methodist Church Hall. So very different from Whaley (as an aside, I would strongly recommend the afternoon teas at Bradwell Methodist Church during their Well Dressing - state of the art).
There are so many good things going on in Whaley it is difficult to know where to start - But Footsteps has to be near the top of anyone's list, a truly great example of successful community enterprise - Well done everyone. The Shep's, The Goyt and the D&P are outstanding pubs that draw in an interesting cross-section of Whaley people ( I have a friend from Germany who flies in regularly for a pint or two at the Shep's). Those who work to make W3, the Rose Queen Weekend, the Well Dressing, the superb firework display and all of our other community activities a success deserve our praise. The Medical Centre is first rate too. I could go on for hours..... Edited by user 06 July 2009 17:45:12(UTC)

RockBanker's description of Hathersage has given me another idea of promoting a bit of Whaley postivity.
Which is a list of: I'd rather live in Whaley than...
I'll get the ball rolling with... Dove Holes
How very lucky we are.

I'd rather live in Whaley than Hazel Grove because everytime I have the misfortune to drive through there (which is most days) the only people I see are nasty young shavers and chavs with their hands down the front of their tracksuit bottoms!!!
In the evening you have to negociate your car around the people walking from pub/bar to pub/bar mainly using the road as the pavement and always smashed!
Long live Whaley!!!! Edited by user 09 July 2009 06:09:21(UTC)

Des Coleman (butcher) Pyjama Factory (band) Sheps (legendary pub) Al Madina (curry heaven) Dean Kennedy (dentist) Raj at the Co-op Pharmacy Pete Scragg (mechanic who fixes mudflaps for free) Joe (for great acoustic sessions in The Cock) Tony (for a barbers shop transported from an different age)
I moved from Bramhall, so I can say with 100% confidence that I would rather live here than there.
