Thanks for the update Web Watcher.

You are correct, Kevin Fletcher is the new landlord of the Board Inn and I wish him all the best.

Hopefully CllrJonG will have more up to date information regarding the Jodrell.

The ''Highwayman" at Rainow has been spruced up outside, and looks to re-open on the 20th May.

Good to see that one re-opening but very sad that we have no news at all regarding The Jodrell.

After looking over your opinions for some time i thought i should share some information that may help, little information that it is but still.

Between Nov09 - Jan10 i contacted the new owners by email, enquiring about The Jodrell and whether roumers i heard whilst working at 'Fennel'(No.29) before we closed it were true - That it was going to be a Gastro pub Restaurant. They contacted me the following day explaining that they were hoping to open this year although they have had delays, and that they would keep in touch regarding its re-opening and any future employment with them. They seemed very friendly and positive about the plans for the place. Whenever this shall happen.

I also spoke with a colleague that said he had spoken with one of the owners whilst parking out the front and he had apparently said to him that they have had various problems with planning due to it being listed, therefore so many things they wanted to do have had to be changed which as we can all understand has slowed the project. However, i am sure of great things and a true believer in great things come to those who wait.

I know it is frustrating to wait for so long and not know of the latest goings on
Silenced but i am sure whatever happens it will be fantastic and will begin to save Whaley Bridge from our current predicament. I think it would also help if everyone stopped whittering utter nonsense and preaching about the future of the place and started being more supportive to the owners and encourage the project rather than tarnishing it for people that are looking forward to it re-opening, even if it is a slow process.

We all want a nice place to eat ,drink and socialise in Whaley Bridge to get us away from  its current downfalls, even "youth" like myself. Places like this will be fighting and losing battle if we continue to have this attitude you have all taken, 'Fennel' (N0.29) being a recent example.

Hope this helps! Thank you.
Cheers

ooooo I love keyboard warriors ! - people who know very little whilst  pretending  to know a lot.

'flame baiter' is another term applicable to the rather naiive rant above..which doesn't actually say much at all apart from a few mis-placed sentiments, and faith in person's unknown, in the faint hope there may be a job in it for them.

I've been going in the Jodrell since 1976, and even held my leaving party there in 1980. Back then it was still a hotel ( as was The Cock ) and  was being run by Jack Bond, who took it over from the solicitor Ray Allen, who'd lived at Whaley Hall prior to that.

Yes, it was the place to be seen in and it was a 'grown ups' pub. Sadly it was left to go to rack and ruin and was just too expensive to run and maintain, and in it's dying stages had been insiduously killed off by unsrupulous landlords then managers. Once the drug dealers and kids became the norm in there and the grown ups found a better place to spend their money, the death knell finally sounded.

The problem the current owners are faced with ( for the benefit of those with tendencies to spout off naiively)  is  the men's toilets. Many readers here will know the arome de loo which plagued the men's WC.  The problem lies with the levels of the building.  The men's toilets are on the ground floor, and the drains 6 foot below that. Unfortuately, 6ft below ground level is barely at cellar level and most certainly not below road level - where all drains are.  During excavation work to sink the drains to below ( Market Street ) road level, the builders came against a very old wall/s of some distinction. Work was halted and the wall investigated. It was found to be medieval in origin - and as such can't be removed.  English Heritage are involved so it could be a long drawn out affair... rather like the new bridge saga.

With regards the Navvi: that's going to be 4 self contained flats....

.......one day.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others -even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

I do not claim to have any inside knowledge regarding this subject but the more observant member will have noticed that the Jodrell owners placed an ad in our W3 program-now that has got to be something positive

There were workmen at the Jodrell this morning and there is a portaloo in the car park.

Anyone know the current situation?

Hi,

I have not heard anything at WBTC regarding progress on the Jodrell. There is work planned on the Station. I wonder if it's to do with that - I'll see if I can find out.

If further work is happening that it's positive news.

Jon.

Hi

I was in discussion with locals yesterday in a hostelry, I won't say where but it closes today for about a month while it is "done up".

I was told that the current owners have run out of money and it will, or as, been sold. I know this is not exact information but everything seems to have stopped there and no one seems to get a response from their website, so the outlook does not seem promising.

I too have e-mailed the owners via the web site a number of times and have heard nothing back. Sadly Norm I think that what you have heard will be true as there has been no movement or work there for months now. It's such a shame to see it still closed and I hope that someone will be brave enough to buy it and complete the project.

That rumour has been around for a while. The trouble is that some of these rumours have originated as stories exaggerated and bandied round many of the pubs in whaley over numerous pints.

The project was apparently still on in june as I believe the owner placed a sponsorship advert in the W3 program so, what is the truth here maybe the owner could please update us at some point if only to put things straight.

Or answer queries on their website. Whilst there are no answers, rumours will persist. I hope you are right Tyke.

I suppose this is not current news but it was a news item in its day.

North Derbyshire & North Cheshire Advertiser

14 April 1882

serious accident

A man who appeared to be a stranger, walked in the dark over a wall in front of the Jodrell Arms on Monday evening.
He injured his face very badly.
The Local Board may find themselves in for damages for leaving this place unprotected.

I wonder if The Local Board did end up in hot water.

I heard another potential rumour today that the project is still on but held up with a legal issue over something or other. Lets hope that is the case and that soon it will be a case of.

Good afternoon CllrJonG

Following your posting in the “Remembrance Sunday” thread, I note you are now in contact with the owner of the Jodrell Arms. Are you able to provide us with an update on the current position including the likely time frame for the reopening of the Jodrell?

Hi HE,

It's a different Middleton. Jeremy Middleton is the owner of the Jodrell. No news to report I'm afraid.

Cheers

I've received a Whaley Water Weekend leaflet which says the Jodrell Arms are the primary sponsors of the event. Their advert says they're looking forward to opening a completely refurbished pub and please check out our website for the latest news and information. Does this mean the Jodrell will open soon or is it an old advert which has been used for years? The website quoted doesn't exist.

I've also heard the free boat trips have been cancelled from this years Water Weekend because of a lack of boats. Can anyone confirm this?

Where do these silly rumours start?

There are free boat trips this year as I've volunteered my services as a pilot and have had them accepted.

I'm surprised, what with your involvement with W3 you didn't know?

I seem to remember that the same advert was on last year's W3 leaflet. The website didn't exist then either Eh?

Someone in the chippy said the owners had applied for planning to turn into holiday lets but it got turned down. If true that would have been a good idea, it would bring Income to the town & give the building some purpose. Anyone aware if an application for such use was made?
