My Great Uncle Thomas Middleton enlisted at Whaley Bridge (details as per the Roll of Honour - Private 292021, 8th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Died of wounds in Egypt 5th November 1917. Aged 38. Born Yeseley-Cum-Whaley, Cheshire, enlisted Whaley Bridge, resident Furness Vale. Son of William and Mary Ann Middleton, of Furness Vale, Stockport. Formerly 57289, Army Service Corps. Buried in DEIR EL BELAH WAR CEMETERY, Israel. Plot/Row/Section B. Grave 95.)

What I was wanting to find out is where in Whaley Bridge did the enlistment take place, and does anyone know of any newspaper articles mentioning his death?

Thanks

Emma

Emma

I do have a short article about Tom Middleton. It is a page from a forthcoming booklet by Rowena Clark about soldiers from Furness Vale who lost their lives in World War I. Please see my post on Facebook.

The 1911 census records Thomas Middleton, born 1880, aged 31, living at Buxton Road, Furness Vale. His occupation was Stone Mason's Labourer. He was born in Yeardsley-Cum-Whaley parish.

Other occupants at that address were his father William Middleton, born 1847, aged 64. Born Yeardsley-Cum-Whaley. His occupation was Gentleman with private means.

Sister Edith Agnes Middleton, born 1878, aged 33. She was "housekeeper at home".

Brother Henry Middleton, born 1885, aged 26, a "Print Works Labourer"

By 1924, Edith Agnes had married. Her husband was the village butcher, John James Jackson. She died in 1956.  The Middleton family home appears to have been 86 Buxton Road, a house in the row known as "Shady Grove".  Another branch of the family, headed by John Handford farmed at Ringstones in 1911. Yeardsley Hall had also been home to Middleton's;  George and Rachel and their children William and Hannah. I am not very good at unravelling relationships but this William was probably Tom Middleton's father.
