For any Steam Train enthusiasts a Double Headed charter train will pass through Whaley on route to Buxton next Sat. 26th. Feb. The train should be hauled by Jubilee class 5690 Leander and Black 5 No. 44871 and coupled to 10 coaches and a Maintenance wagon. It should pass through Whaley at approx. 10.50hrs and stay in Buxton until 13.20hrs and then return via Peak Dale and the Hope Valley on route back to Lancaster. It was due to pass Whaley on Sat. afternoon but the direction has been reversed.

Saw these a few times in Ashton near the football stadium whilst at kids football. It was amazing to see peoples reaction, particularly the kids. Time is probably playing tricks with my memory but I'm sure that there used to frequent steam engines running when I was younger. I distinctly remember the Sir Nigel Gresley a few times (same class as Mallard).
Oh, and I don't need wise comments from the usual suspects saying that they were the normal mode of transport when I was younger! You know who you are.

Hi
Devious has sent me this photograph with the following note, I suspect the photograph you tried to put on the site was too large Devious.
Norm. Here is a picture of today's steam train. This was taken climbing out of Whaley heading towards Cadster. I have tried to put it on the forum without success. Could you place it on the steam train section for me please.
Regards Devious
Norm

Was quite a sight rattling past Bridgemont at the footpath crossing, a small group had gathered from what I assume was hardcore steam enthusiasts wanting to get away from the crowds. Made my way up to Eccles Pike soon after and caught sight of the locomotive passing through Chapel and past the Chiney South Junction, sadly the weather was still relatively dull so the pic didn't come out as well as anticipated. Beats watching TV all day however.

I took my kids to Barmoor Clough to see it,but it was packed and I could not park(there were 2 spots as I turned to face the right way at the roundabout, when i got there they had been snaffled).I ended up at Chapel station and that was busy. The sound could be heard as it came out through Cadster,as it entered the station I have never witnessed anything like it.The noise and vibration made the hairs on my neck stand up as it roared through the station,I filmed it but I dont think that I can upload it on here.Amazing and if anyone os interested its the model railway exhebition at Chapel school.I shall be taking my little trainspotters there tomorrow,

Thanks to everybody for posting their photos of the railtour, we have a fairly good record between us of its journey through our "patch".
As no-one has supplied one at Whaley station, here's mine... buggyite attached the following image(s): |

And just as a final picture, and more of a scenery photo than a train photo, here is one looking down into Chee Dale from off Topley Pike.
Blackwell Mill cottages on the right, with the train taking the curve from out of Wye Dale heading for Great Rocks. buggyite attached the following image(s): |

Can I just say how fantastic these pictures are !! They are fab and give a lovely insight into the age of steam - a time which I remember, but youngsters today may not appreciate. How exciting for youngsters to hear and see these wonderful engines. You lucky people !!

Each time I check on this, the route seems to have changed.
At the moment, the train is routed on its outward leg via Huddersfield, Standege Tunnel and Stalybridge, instead of the Hope Valley line.
However, on its return journey, the route IS via the Hope Valley, and is coming up the "new" line over the viaduct at New Mills.
The relevant times are:
Hazel Grove - 19:03
Chinley North Junction - 19:15.
Good viewpoints would be Marsh Lane Bridge, or by the half-arches where the recent landslip was at Buxworth, or Chinley. |

44871 was 45min delayed departing I believe, however its made up ground so times should still stand barring any signal delays or mechanical issues. 44871 was one of the locomotives run back in February on the 'Buxton Spa Express' so it'll be a opportunity to see this engine carrying 11 carriages without the need for Leander.
Anytime between 7.03pm - 7.15pm its due to pass New Mills, Furness, Buxworth & Chinley.

There should be another pair of steam trains on the Whaley line on 5th Nov. on route to Buxton. I will put more details on the forum at a later date.
