Here's another picture of a Whaley football team.  I know Bill Brooks is the player on the back row, on the right.  Know anyone else?

The player next to Bill Brooks is Ernest Derbyshire who once ran the newsagents on Old Road. The goalkeeper was Stanley Cotterill who lived on Caldene Terrace and worked at Botany Bleach works up to his retirement.

Hello Frankie,

Excellent post if I may say so; good research and a welcome contribution to the historical side of the forum.
With you permission I shall archive this valuable piece of information.

Good Afternoon R.S.S.
Thank you for your reply and comments. You are welcome to archive any information that I may post on the forum. The only other player that may be on Gnats photo that I know of is Arthur Jackson who played for the same team ( Horwich End)of which I am unable to recognise.Arthur worked at Botany Bleach Works as the Joiner until his retirement. He lives on Macclesfield Rd and still walks to the village shops. He must be getting on for four score & ten.I think Jakes corner shop might be to far away.Arthur has written two books
entitled The Life And Times Of Arthur Jackson. Maybe you have read the books. Frankie

Hello Frankie & R.S-S

Thank you both for your input on the photos. Dad can't place Arthur Jackson although he feels he should know him. (He's four score & eight !) There is a slight difference though in that he wouldn't walk to the end of the footpath/drive !! I hope Mr Jackson lives at the bottom of the hill and not the top !!

I keep reading Dad these little nuggets of information. He remembers Ernie Derbyshire and Stanley Cotterill and thinks the player on the front row, second from the right is ? Cooper.

Good evening Frankie,

I saw Arthur the other morning standing just past the old Botany gates. It was quite early so I am not sure if he was waiting for the bus or reminiscing about when he used to stand there waiting for Len Palfrey to open up to allow him to clock-on. Everybody used to stand out there as they did not want to go in a minute before they had to. I think Arthur spent a lot of his time in later years repairing the conveyors in the breakers department which were made out of timber ( a bit like bamboo canes) because of the dry cotton. The same system of conveyors was also used in the drying department so Arthur would have had a bit of work in there but not as much as in the breakers where the bales of raw cotton were broken up prior to boiling and bleaching.

The cottages on the right just through the gates which now have balconies over the river and are opposite Botany Cottage were the clocking-on point for the whole of the factory and Len Palfrey was the lodge keeper. He later moved to New Road and took on the job of water man. The last lodge man before it closed in 1999 was Mr James Turner and by that time the clocking on had been split into three places; one in No 1dept, one in No 2 dept (Germany) and one in the CP Plant.

Yes Sir,

We do know each other very well indeed and as we are such good friends I know I can rely on you, as you can on me, to respect my privacy and identity.

Next time I see you out and about in Horwich End we must have a chat about the good old days.

I am certain you know who R. S-S is, and his identity has been something that has intrigued me for months. However I would be grateful if you would keep his identity to yourself because R. S-S as I have been comunicating by e-mail for a while now on the side of the forum.

To say the least my health has not been very good recently and he has been a stalwart in helping me trying to cope with my condition.

I obviously do not know his identity but he has allowed my to open up to him in my e-mails and at times I have gone into great depth about my feelings during my treatment. He as I say been tremedously supportive and a great shoulder to cry on during difficult times. I have needed to talk to somebody outside of my immediate family in order just to get by.

This anonymity is critical because it gives him the ability to stand back from my situation and be very rational about my problem and talk me through it.

The decision of course is yours but at thsi critical time in my life I need this gentleman and the anonymity that surrounds him.

Many thanks

Jake

I was very sorry to read your post Jake, and wish you all the best.

I know from past experience that there are occasions when someone not intimately involved can be easier to talk to than someone very close. It is good to know that R.S-S is fulfilling that role.

Good luck.

Hi George

Thanks for your input on this photo. Never too late for information on history !!

I am interested to know if the Beddalls named are connected to the family who emigrated to Canada. (This may seem a little obscure but my family were friends of the Canadian family).

I think my Dad (a Whaley lad) will know these names and will let him know of your posting.

Many thanks

Gnats
