I noticed earlier but presumed, maybe wrongly, that David knew. Good idea pointing it out Gnats.

David
This makes very interesting reading. I remember my grandmother talking about the evacuees they had from Manchester (I think she helped with the billeting) and they took the last family because no-one wanted a child who had an illness - I think it was measles or chicken pox, something like that. She said that the first thing they had to do was bath everyone - the children were very confused by that ! They didn't stay long, I think they went back to Manchester. I can't imagine where they all fitted in - it was a two-up/two-down cottage with a basement.
It must've been a culture shock on both sides. People must have had to draw on skills they didn't even know they had and it makes you wonder whether, in the world in which we live today. such a thing would ever be contemplated again, if it were necessary.

My Mum and her siblings are still in touch with the family who stayed at their house as evacuees. I can remember them coming every year to see my Grandparents when they were alive. Sadly in turn funeral visits have been necessary.
I'm glad to say there was never any mention of dirty and unkempt guests, otherwise I don't think the families would still be in contact nearly 70 years later!
