Dear All,
I was looking through some photos I found on my PC of the repairs to Toddbrook Reservoir which I think was in 1979 and I just wondered if anyone had any colour photos just to add a little more perspective.
Example attached.

Great photos Radar .If you have anymore it would be great to see them. I had the the pleasure of ringing British Waterways yesterday to report a large hole that had appeared in the floor of the bridge that crosses the overflow on the dam wall. Went over today and a temp job had been carried out to cover the hole.

Very interesting photo's Radar. It would appear that the contractors undertaking the work are a firm called Wade's who I understand used to be located in Whaley Bridge. Does anyone know where the company traded from and if the company is still in existence.

Z & W Wade was a major employer in Whaley until quite recently. They had several premises including where Stanways electricals is currently and also the Kuranda Marine office (which I believe was also a greasy spoon truck stop at some point).
Wade's were particularly good at providing proper apprenticeships and I have several friends who learned their trade at Wade's.
I'm sure many Whaley residents will be able to provide a full history.

Z & W Wade Ltd arrived in Whaley Bridge in the 1920’s as Public Works Contractors.
They originally came from Halifax and their trading name on arriving in Whaley was, I believe, Z & W Wade (Halifax and Whaley Bridge) Ltd.
They were known locally as Zacker and Wacker obviously after the initials Z & W
Their names were actually Zachariah and William but Zachariah was affectionately known, by some, as Zimmer.
A very interesting firm indeed on here.

A friend of mine did his apprenticeship there and I also had a relative there in the dim and distant past.

Z & W Wade's star employee was the legendary John Eastwood. He eventually moved down south to set up his own Travel Agency.

Scuba Man,
Wecome to the local history forum.
You are correct, Sir. We have neglected to debate the history of the introduction of local and overseas travel to Whaley Bridge; and no mention, as far as I can recall, has been made of that fine organisation Eastwood Travel.
I remember it specialised in organised trips overseas but you had to be wary of last minute surcharges. Did it have its offices in The Jodrell Arms? I have not seen Eastwood Travel advertising recently and I rather suspect it will have become a part of Thomas Cook.
I also recall that their flights were with a budget airline called Plummet Airways which later became Easy Jet.
I wonder what John is doing now.
He certainly was an entrepreneur and he definitely knew how to make money out of organising foreign holidays. Just the sort of man you need in these credit crunching times, don’t you think?

Hello R S-S,
Plummet Airways. Wow what a fun name for an airline. Sounds like they had Pontius as a pilot and outside toilets.
During the seventies there was a rock band called Plummet Airline

I have a few queries about Toddbrook Reservoir, which I am sure someone on here will be able to help me with, so here goes:
1) When was the reservoir first built?
2) What was there before the reservoir?
3) When I arrived in Whaley in 1979, the reservoir was empty, and was being repaired. What was the problem?
R.S-S, I would love to enlarge the type in my posts, but my toolbar has disappeared, and I cannot find it. Any suggestions?
By the way, I worked for Z & W Wade many years ago!

Hi Fedup
Can't help with the reservoir but to change the size of the text -
1. once you have clicked on "post", click on the "edit" button - the toolbar then appears.
2. you can then highlight the text and alter the size.
2. You then just click on "post" again.
Hope this helps !

Fedup,
The reservoir was built in 1831 to feed the canal system and the repairs were to fix a leak which started in 1978.

Thanks Radar. Any idea what was there before - i.e. just fields, open land, buildings....? Edited by user 28 July 2009 21:58:54(UTC)

Good Morning Fedup M’Duck,
I couldn’t sleep this morning; something was shining through my windows so I got up early to see if there was still a Sun in our universe, hence my early reply.
I have never seen a photo of the valley before Todbrook Reservoir but there may be some about I suppose. I’d like to see them.
In very hot, dry summers (yes I know wait till next year) the Reservoir dries up and there is no sign of any buildings. Compare this to Ladybower and Fernillee to a lesser extent. About four years ago we had a traditional summer, the Council had remembered to order blue skies and sunshine that year, and up at Fernilee you could see new things appearing each week as the water level dropped. There were tree stumps, fences and drystone walls. Sadly just as the Gunpowder Mill was about to surface someone at the Mechanics did a rain dance and we were denied the opportunity.
Incidentally I do have some photos of the Goyt Valley before the reservoirs were built and one of them is quite rare and taken, I think, from up Long Hill and in the distance you can see that magnificent Mansion House Errwood Hall across the dry valley.
I’ll ask Cllr JonG to put it on here if he will.
R. S-S
Looking forward to your 100th contribution. Make it a good un Old Girl/Boy.

Thanks for that R.S-S.
Looking forward to the photo. I presume the reservoirs are to supply water to various areas of the country. Do you know which area our local reservoirs supply?
I have actually done my 100th contribution - but obviously the powers that be were punishing me again for some awful crime I have committed - see posts 12 and 14 above.
By the way, I don't like to be picky, but "Girl/Boy" might just be taken the wrong way by our ever watchful Administrators - be careful R.S-S! I would hate to think of you being flogged for putting up perverted posts!! Edited by user 29 July 2009 18:21:36(UTC)

Good evening CllrJonG.
No, I'm not talking about the "editing" bit, I know I did that - I just cannot understand why my last 3 posts have all been marked up as my 104th post. I know I am not technically minded, but surely that is wrong?
