Hi ,
I have just heard that the appeal to stop the bridge from being demolished was successful.
I will post the appeal decision shortly.
Cheers

The appeal decision is attached.
In short the Bridge is safe for the moment and Network Rail cannot demolish it.
Ideally, Network Rail will now investigate strengthening methods that will not result in a complete loss of the bridge, and will renovate it to stop it decaying further. Their remaining option is to go to the High Court.
For those that want to see more freight running on the line through Whaley Bridge, this does not stop that. A strengthened bridge can still allow freight trains to run across it, but at a reduced speed, which is unlikely to have any significant impact on journey times.
Cheers

Hi,
I was just wondering whether anybody could confirm this or not. I believed there to be a 10mph speed restriction on the bridge over Buxton Road, i'm not stood up there with a speed gun or anything but the last few days I have noticed the trains seem to be whizzing along there alot fast than normal. We can hear them quite clearly from our house and can tell they slow down when passing but as I said the last few days they haven't slowed down. I would just be concerned for the structure of the bridge if they are travelling too fast.
Thanks
Jen x

Isn't the speed restriction for the fully loaded freight trains rather than for the very light passenger railcars? |
The optimist believes that Whaley Bridge is the best place in the world to live. The pessimist fears he might be correct. |

correct DTS- freight limited to 10mph. Other to 50mph I believe.
Thank you for pointing out the apparent change in speeds of the light trains though.I wonder what is going on.
Cheers

Thanks for clarifying, its obviously hard to say definitely what speed they are going at its just when your used to hearing them you can tell a difference if one is speeding along as it is quite alot louder! They normally go slower anyway due to having to stop at Whaley Bridge so regardless I would have thought a passenger train would slow in time for the stop as they normally do? I'm not too fussed about the noise, it does scare you when you hear it coming but i'm sure ill live! I was just more concerned about the structure, anyway i'm sure they know what they are doing :-/
