I have here a photo from a bundle on Whaley Bridge so I assume it is indeed Whaley Bridge.

The lady in the photo is identified on the back as Blanche Ford.

Anybody, yes you Shallcross, know where in Whaley this is and what is the sign on the wall advertising?

Hey RB,

That’s a pretty good guess and I know that the original photo is cut off and a bit smaller than yours but can you explain the absence of wheelie bins in the original?

No I don’t expect you can.

Maybe, because along with the some of the lettering of the sign, they have been photoshopped out - an offense which, so I am told, some people think should be punished by immediate exile to North Wales.

Yes It is Canal Street used to be number15, restored and now known I belive as Whaley House.

As to the sign don't know of any occupants who dealt in teeth! The Oakes family lived there for many years and Edward Ford was Publican of the the Navigation around 1900, The Police House was for many years on Canal Street  not exactly sure which one but I think it may have been one of the pair with the dressed stone frontage,The only Blanche Ford I remember and I am sure others will too, worked in the Park Cafe lived at Foulds End in Fernilee and was married to Joe Ford.

Nice Photo a piece of history

The last time I saw Blanche Ford was at ther house on Reddish Ave. The photo must be quite a lot older than her, possibly her Aunt???

If the Blanche we knew was in this photo then she was looking good 80 odd years later in the 70s.

Within my bundle of photos of Whaley Bridge is this one of some elephants.
Now I know that the Circus did travel through Whaley at one time and the elephants always stopped for a drink of water at the wells where the advertising hoarding used to be just down from the Jodrell but I can’t recognise the position of this photo.
Rock Banker is a dab hand at finding out locations so I’m handing this one over to him or anyone else who knows where it was taken.

Interesting photo......They are obviously walking up an incline. The only other clue I can spot is the 'Players Please' sign on the shop building.........

This is at the bottom of Union Road. The shop on the left was Burfoots newsagent.  This photo and another elephant picture can be found on the "Picture New Mills" website. It is said to be 1965 and the circus was Gandys which had set up on the Newtown football field.

In those days it was Chaterton’s shop selling sweets, cigarettes and ice cream. They also sold newspapers but only on Sundays, I think in fact they were the sole agents for Sunday papers at that time, for sure they were prior to that date, they also delivered to houses all around New Mills.

Sorry open to correction, on second thoughts, looking at the rubble, as there was a gas explosion at the back of the premises in later years after the Chatertons occupancy, it could well be a picture taken a few years after my recollections.

This photograph is also in my bundle on Whaley Bridge but if the last one is anything to go by it could just as easily be in New Mills or anywhere else for that matter.
So any clues as to just what it was and where it was/is?

I think we can be fairly sure when it was built.

I'm fairly sure that's the building associated with Shireoaks reservoir that was between Breckhead and Shireoaks, North of Chinley.

The reservoir predates the building (on the 1921 map)

The building is still there. There is a footpath that one can use, that can be seen in the foreground.

Look on the map, quite an odd situation for a reservoir.

Confirmation today that the Blanche Ford photograph is Joe Fords Grandmother, and the current Blanche Ford has the very same photo in her family collection .

Thanks Shallcross, I knew I could rely on you.

Here’s another bit of local history and what was a landmark for some time.

Does anyone know if any of it is still standing?

The shaft is now capped by a concrete platform which is surmounted by a pyramid. Trailer caravans now surround this. O. S. maps show another shaft at the head of the clough, near to the golf course and another near the bottom of the clough but there is no evidence of either. There are still remains of the haulage system in the clough which is otherwise still as described in the cutting. Do you know the date of the photo R. S. S. ?

Good morning David,

According to my own records Ringstones Pit closed for the final time in 1896.
So if the reporter was accurate in his reporting then 50 years on would be 1946 so if you think that date suits the photo then that’s that.

I’ve got some interesting/boring stuff on the mines in that area and I might start a new mining thread or put it on here; I can’t decide at the moment.

One thing you will be pleased to know is that the huge lake beneath your home is not getting any bigger. If it was, with all this rain, you would be going out in a canoe and you could start a Furness Vale Water weekend in your own front room.

R. S. S.   I have little about Ringstones other than newspaper cuttings advertising the sale of stock at the time of closure. I have a little more information about Furness pit but probably nothing that you have already in your collection.  A thread on this subject would be very welcome. Boring to some maybe but fascinating to others.

There was a great rushing of water among the trees opposite the other night. My new neighbour was most concerned so by torchlight we investigated and found reassuringly that the water was well contained within the culvert and did not signify a rising of the lake waters.
