Losing Tesco might not be the Nirvana you expect. I shop when I get home from work. That is at 6-7pm. Any shops open in Whaley then? No. So I'll go to Morrisons in Chapel then. As will everyone else.

I have found the 8mm film of the WB Pram Race. It does have the young David Thorpe in it, I think it was the year that he won it as he is receiving something from Bill Nickious (?) the organiser. It also shows quite a lot of well known faces from bygone WB including the village bobby on a bike and the vechicles are so old it takes me back to my youth. After getting about 20 yards of film stuck in my scanner it is now transferred to digital camera CD card. Now I don't think you can upload videos to the forum so how to get it to one and all is a problem. Do I send it to Jon G. of perhaps leave it behind the bar in a pub or a chip shop so anyone can view it and then return it to the bar. This way all can still hide their identity. Suggestions? Fascinating stuff from you Mr Jackson,
Now, Sir, we do not have one winner here but two. The Mother, David Thorpe, would have been awarded with a gold medal and the baby, suitably dressed, would have received an award. I think ‘Baby’ was Keith Longden.
You could put the video on You Tube and put the link on here for us.
I for one would be most interested to see it and possibly myself.

Hi Frankie,
Sorry I could not stop yesterday there was too much traffic behind me.
I was just on my way back from down town and I spotted what I thought was a familiar looking gentleman. He could not see me where I was standing but I could see him quite clearly. In the end I decided it was not who I thought it was and moved away and started to walk up the road when someone shouted me.
I turned round and it was the strangely familiar man and he was Mr John Garvey.
I did not recognise him as there is a lot of snow on top right now but the thing that had thrown me was the lack of a moustache. He had shaved it off for a Christmas present for his wife a couple of years ago he told me.
He asked how you were and where Arthur lived. I told him and he is going to see Arthur.
John looked in good nick. Not as good as you or I, of course, but pretty good all the same.

R.S-S I met J.G. a few weeks ago in Whaley, he was making his way to the Botany site (in the capacity of Boiler Inspector) to inspect an air receiver for a company on that site. Still the same jovial fellow and I will always have great respect for him. Edited by user 30 August 2009 11:37:24(UTC)

I assume by that, Frankie, you mean both posts above show 83. The software shows the total number of your posts not the number of that particular post i.e. if you reply to this it will show 84 as will the previous 2 above. I hope that makes it clearer.

This buggy is brilliant, I've been to Mrs. Burfit's shop in Fernilee but find it has closed. The buggy didn't like parking on the hill outside where it was ( as all the Horwich end folk on the forum will remember). She sold almost everything, a sort of "Arkwrights".Her customers lived in huts in a pub car park in Horwich End. This was the hey-day of that pub as they were mostly Irish navvys and as usual drank for Ireland.
P.S. The pram race should be available soon on u-tube, then watch out for "Viagra at Whaley"

Fantastic, Mr Jackson.
The direct link is below.(I just copied the URL from the box on the right of the video on You Tube and pasted it below)

Do you have any other stuff like this? It's a superb record of the past.! Viagra at Whaley sounds much more recent.
Thanks very much for sharing it.
Cheers

Fantastic film Mr Jackson !
Thank you for putting this film on Youtube - very entertaining.
Now, I have to pick your brains - was the film the old "Super 8" type and, if so, how did you manage to "scan" it onto a card?
I have a bag full of super-8 films which I would dearly love to put onto cd - I have movie-editing software on my pc for camcorder film but don't have the means of transferring old-fashioned film onto a cd. Any pointers on what type of equipment I need to invest in? I suspect there may be a pram race or two in the "film bag" as well !!

Thanks Jon. Now Gnatalee I have cheated a little here. Years ago I had all my standard 8 films put onto a VHS tape. I played it and videoed the TV screen with my digital camera. I then played this down to Utube. Wait until you see Viagra at Whaley Bridge.

Hi Mr Jackson !
That was a quick reply! I have been looking at websites on this subject since I saw your video.
Of all the films I have, I only have 1 video made from about 3-4 super-8 reels. It was a right performance ! I had them done at Supersnaps (remember them? they are no more and I'm not surprised !) I ordered the tape for a "special birthday", was told it would take 7 days, I allowed 10 and it still didn't arrive in time. Consequently I never carried on having the reels transferred onto video. I still have the projector and screen (but the bulb has gone once again on the projector).
As an aside, I have to say that the cine camera gave our family many years of entertainment. My Grandfather bought the kit from Boots (in Buxton I think) - camera, projector and screen, and later bought the film editing equipment which was a manual contraption where you fed the film through by turning wheels and when you wanted to cut something out (usually a burn mark when the projector had stopped and the bulb burnt a hole in the film !) the film was then spliced using cutters and gum to glue the bits back together again. Aaahh - happy days - 'cos it was my job to play around with the film and play at being "film editor".
Thank you for your help - can't wait to see "Viagra at Whaley Bridge" - my mind is wandering already !

Gnatalee, If you ever find any firm that will transfer standard 8 or super 8 to tape or disc; Edit all your films together so there is only one reel to copy. The companies that do the transfer charge by the reel not by the length of film. Some of my films were only feet long and they cost just the same as very long ones. When you have them on a disc it is easy to divide them again.
P.S. You were obviously very affluent in the past as we could only afford the standard 8 the type that didn't have sound - - -Oh ! How the others lived.

Thanks
I don't think they were that affluent - the kit came from Boots, as I remember, and was saved for but was well worth what was paid (I think it was around £40-£50 which was a lot then) perhaps they bought it "on tick" !
Thanks for the hints

Gnatalee, I've just been via google to CINE TO DVD. Some are in the US but some seem OK and one charges £20 per film.

Hi Gnatalee,
I have just done a quick search on google UK and there seem to be plenty of firms out there. I would have thought it would be cheaper to get them done by a firm rather than buy all the kit you would need. There is a firm in Dove Holes that do some sort of transfer service, but i am not sure if that is just for photographs or VHS to DVD. Here is on link i found on google. http://www.cinetodvd.com/
