Having been introduced to Errwood Hall via the works of Alan Garner (The Moon of Gomrath) some 37 years agi, I have read a lot about it over the years and have thoroughly enjoyed my occasional visits to the estate.
On one of my last visits I followed the path from the hall to the burial ground and discovered the 'coffin stone'. The coffin stone is reputedly where mourners would rest during the climb up the hill. It might be mistaken for an ordinary stone bench, but it was to place the coffin on. Unfortunately - though not surprisingly - the stone had been kicked off its supports by some nice people and lay on the ground. I reported this fact to the parks authority. Does anyone know if it was ever restored to its rightful position? This was some years ago.
Brian.

Hi
I have had another query by email. Hopefully they will join the forum.

Hello
I wonder if you could help me, my Grandfather Arthur Graves was a coachman at Errwood Hall in 1927.
As we are a Hertford family he would have transferred there from Bengeo Hall with Hellier Gosselin Grimshaw.
I have information on Errwood from the Internet and Gerald Hancock's book on the Goyt Valley, but I have been unable to trace the employment records, I would love to see if I can find out when he went from Bengeo to Errwood. I know he returned to Bengeo as he and Granny (a Bengeo Hall Kitchen Maid) married and lived in Bengeo.
Does anyone know if any such records exist and if so where they are kept.
Hope you can help thanking you in anticipation
Norm
