I wondered why a photo of the Braintree Battalion of Sherwood Foresters would be entered of the WB Forum until I studied it with a large magnifying glass. There is Brian  Woolley AGAIN. Well spotted.

The 6th Sherwoods were our local territorial battalion.By local I mean Whaley Bridge, Chapel, New mills Dove Holes and Buxton.
There is a Whaley bridge connection in the Photo. Seated 3rd from left Major Edward Hall.
His family had of course owned then ran the bleach works Botany. The photo was taken just before the 6th Sherwoods left for France in 1915.
Major Hall resided at Shallcross Manor Whaley Bridge.
Major Halls father was one of the first volunteers in the Sherwood Rifles in 1868.He went on to become a Colonel and was a most popular fellow.
Major Hall followed his fathers footsteps was promoted in 1918 to Colonel and commanded the 6th Sherwoods till the 1920s.
He survived the war though invalided home and was involved with the local Volunteers till his death in 1941.
Hope that sheds some light on the photo though I didn't post it.

Dear Curtain twitcher, and everyone.

I am pleased that you were able to put the details on here.

I was trying to do last night or should  I say this morning !!!!

As you know their is a connection to the Top of Horwich Burial Society,  Whaley Bridge, for which R S S has the details.

As you know it is an interesting read, and for anyone who want to find the details just type in Top of Horwich Burial Society, and the details will come up.

Have a good week

Fr Jamie

Here’s one for the mathematicians amongst us. I’ll not name any prospective solvers of this family numbers puzzle. Oh go on then it’s you Jamie being as it comes within you profession.

High Peak News

3 November 1894

The Oracle and the Daily Advertiser for November 15th, 1798, contains this curious marriage announcement, which will be read with interest in Whaley Bridge :--“At Taxhill, in Cheshire, Mr T. Johnson, of Whaley, to Mrs Margaret Osborne, of Horridge End, whose ages together make 161 years.    The former is father to ten children, grandfather to 89, and great-grandfather to 27.    The latter is mother to 20, grandmother to 94, and great-grandmother to 24 children.    Total number, 272 persons.”

Now whatever is the true size of the family I bet they made more noise than JGTC.

Dear R S S

Hope you are well.

All  I can say is that in those days, being no TV, Radio, etc it must of been cold winters, and had to keep them selves warm some how !!!!!!!

PS I thought I would post this in Lentern  array being the 2nd Sunday in Lent !!!!!

One does wonder what they gave up for Lent !!!!

R S S

Today we have heard on the Radio, the sad news about Taxal Lodge, or even further back in time one would of said Taxal Hall.

Do you have any pictures of it inside and outside on how it once looked.

Sadly I have never had the chance to go their,  but I was told that you were up to the last few years able to make out the original gardens etc.

Yours as ever

Jamie

Dear R S S ,

Thank you for sharing this picture,  I did see one earlier by old Francis Frith, as you know he is a good friend of Whaley Bridge !!!!

I wonder if Lord Cornflake is related to the Jodrell empire of Taxal, as his ancestral home.

What would his grace make of todays news ?

Are you their Dora ?

Hope your well, and being a long established member of the Whaley tribe im sure you will have some pictures of Taxal like are good friend here R S S.

However on a serious note I read last night that the old Hotel on London Rd had a fire on Friday night, I hope that nobody has been injured.

Sadly  buildings are sometimes fired because they need too much money spending on them or insurance jobs, and even someone wanting the land to build upon, I hope that Taxal Lodge has not been lost, and that one day it will be put back to something of splendour.

Yours as ever

Jamie

Sorry to ask, but as a resident "outsider", what's happened to Taxal Lodge?

Hi Gnats

Here's what the local police had to say about Taxal Lodge on their regular email this week:

[RINGMASTER COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Buxton - BC171 Crime number: 10399/10]

Police are appealing for information following an arson incident which happened at 0200hrs on Sunday 28th February. The offenders set fires in derelict school buildings on Linglongs Road, Taxal, Whaley Bridge. They also set traps and trip wires inside the building causing danger to emergency service officers.

If any local residents have information that may assist police enquiries, please call 0345 123 33 33 quoting crime number: 10399/10.

Thank you.

Trisha Mellor, B Division Community Information Officer,
Corporate Communications, Buxton Police Station

It does make you wonder what it's coming to when traps and wires are set to injure the very people who are trying to help - I guess that's a sign of the times unfortunately.

That's appalling - and I thought I was living in "Dodge City" !! There's something seriously wrong with someone when they do that. No doubt, if found, those responsible will be slapped on the wrist (lightly, of course).

What is the World coming to?

I went to this school as a kid, it makes me sad to see it this way. It was a boys/girls school when I was there between 1989/1991, you had to stay there during the week and were allowed home for weekends. Despite the fact it was for disruptive kids I spent some of the best years of my young life there and all the staff were amazing considering how much they had to put up with. I hope it get's the owner it deserves, if I won the euro-millions I would buy it tomorrow. Russell.
