Having wandered round W3 this weekend I would like to say well done to the organisers of the event. I thought there was much more this year and plenty to amuse all ages. It seemed quite well attended and did seem to be pulling in visitors from outside whaley. Well the weather helped quite a bit here. I hear on the Whaley grapevine though, that it may have been the last, hope not, it would be nice to see this event build on this years success and become more a more prominent event in our area. Whaley can only benefit from this. It did seem a shame though that festivities did not go through until the evening on saturday as I think that would have drawn even more in. Maybe next year?

I agree Tyke it was a definite success.Maybe we could have some live misic in the evening on the stage.I even ventured on to captain Kelsalls boat for a few beers.Thats it apart from well done to the W3 committee.

I would like to add my congratulations too. We had a very pleasant hour or so wandering round the stalls on Saturday and were impressed by the turnout. Given the number of cars double parked along the road almost as far as Tesco I imagine that there must have been a good number of visitors from out of town. I hope that our local businesses all benefited. We could hear the hubbub and the traction engine whistle as far away as Rock Bank – great to hear the sound of a vibrant community at play.

I have been meaning to post about W3 for a while but have been working     

A BIG WELL DONE to all involved..
 
Don't give up when you have got it this far, it would be a real shame to lose it!

Hi

I agree with Tyke.  It was a good event for families to attend and a high proportion of visitors were from out of town.  There are not enough community events which bring everyone out-even the caranival has died a death -so to this end it could have gone on a bit at least into the early evening-with more entertainment on the stage, which may have bought more residents out to commune

Personally speaking a MINI music festival sounds good, but it should be a mix for all tastes. We do have existing camping facilities within walking distance should anybody want to stay over and spend money in WB, so it need not just be for the locals. Perhaps the pubs could get involved here, to provide better and quieter late night venues. I'm not thinking of Glastonbury here, but more a mix possibly folk, jazz, as well as contemporary. I know some of you out there will cringe at the thought of noise into the evening but is it not a good price to pay on an odd few nights a year to make Whaley a more vibrant place and help local businesses and employment?

The words planning, regulations and apathy come to mind. 

To extend W3 into the evening(s) using the existing stage would require much co-operation and co-ordination and possibly cost.

The pub idea sounds good- a sort of W3 'fringe'-has any one been to Fenny Bentley and seen what the Bentley Brook Inn manages to pull off (all on it's own) on a spring bank holiday.   I refer you to an opinion previously expressed that a successful Jodrell arms redevelopment is the key to halting the decline of Whaley Bridge commercially and possibly socially

I am pleased to see such a positive responce to the event which in fairness was helped this year by the fine weather.

I believe the reason the event is in doubt next year has to do with the number of people on the organising committee. Barrie Walker I think is the main point of contact but this can be checked out with the Town Clerk.

Based on the information being correct some may wish to approach him with their ideas, maybe offer their services if the committee is short of members.

Many thanks Jake for your support and giving me as the contact for W3. The event this year has been planned and carried out over the last 12 months by myself and Jim Middleton ONLY. Stewards on the day were local volunteers. The boat drivers were from further afield and many have helped out before. We are very grateful that they continue to come. We were all delighted with the weather but this was overdue considering what we have had in previous years. It does help a lot BUT don't forget that the organisation MUST be there in the first instance. Many thanks for the flurry of kind comments above, on the telephone and on the day. They are what fuels us. However we ARE looking for some volunteers to take over. I would be happy to organise just the boat rides and pass on to the next chairman a wealth of notes, emails, numbers and ideas for the future. We thought about an extended evening of music and the idea is a sound one (oops sorry!). There is camping and B & B. in abundance. We have the ideas and importanatly the structure for further success. We need the bodies to carry it out! W3 would like to thank my wife Liz, who organises the boat free tickets and does the crowd control at the embarkation point forTWO days without a break or help from anyone. We had 782 bums in boats. It is our proud boast that a family can come to the Whaley Wharf and be entertained for at least half a day without any cost whatsoever and long may that be the case. So finally our thanks to all stewards, boat crew and others who made this an undoubted success, to those businesses of Whaley Bridge who support us via an advert in our programme, to Whaley Bridge Town Coucil for their grant and cooperation, to British Waterways and those who represent us who come and support the event on the day and to those I should not have but may have forgotten. Please forgive my old memory. Here's to the next one!!  BARRIE WALKER W3 CHAIRMAN.

Another one. A quicky. We have the seed of a music festival already in that The Acoustic Collective folk group we 'employ' each year at W3 do camp locally and play in the local pubs at the W3 weekend. They were in The Shepherds on Friday night and The Board Inn on Saturday. IT COULD BE EXTENDED WITH ENOUGH HELP ! I am told it was fun but was too knackered to be there after W3. Barrie Walker

Especially if you add the Dog & Partridge and the Buggy Navvy into the equation, Whaley Bridge has an excellent choice of pubs and real ales. With good public transport links along the A6 corridor the town should be able to attract real ale fans from a large catchment area. Perhaps some kind of collective promotion involving the publicans, the town council, CAMRA, Northern Rail etc within this catchment area might return dividends and not just for the pubs. Call it for example “The Whaley Ale Trail”.

I must agree the Whaley Water Weekend was most enjoyable and a tremendous success.

Well done to all those involved in the organisation of the event. You are a credit to our village.
